The Board of Directors of the Association of German Banks on monday voted to appoint Christian Sewing as its new President. Christian Sewing is the CEO of Deutsche Bank and on 1 July 2021 he will take over from Hans-Walter Peters, who has held the position since April 2016 with a brief interruption.

“I’m very pleased to announce Christian Sewing as my successor,” said Hans-Walter Peters, Advisory Board Chairman of private bank Berenberg. “We have a trusting and friendly relationship. I hold him in very high regard. He will give the private banks a strong voice.”

Sewing thanked Hans-Walter Peters for his considerable and flexible commitment, “Hans-Walter has played a key role in shaping the association and preparing it for future challenges. For many years, he has tirelessly championed the issues and interests of private banks in Germany and the rest of Europe. I’d like to thank him wholeheartedly for his commitment on behalf of the entire association and all its members,” said Christian Sewing.

Christian Sewing believes there are a number of major challenges ahead for German and European banks, “Not only do we need to deal with the consequences of the pandemic, but we also need to shape the transformation to a digital and sustainable economy – and that will require enormous investment. The private banks will play their part to ensure this transformation is successful and our economy emerges from the crisis stronger than ever.”

Christian Sewing has been a member of the Board of Directors of Deutsche Bank since 1 January 2015 and its CEO since April 2018. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of German Banks since April 2018. Peters has been the Director of the Advisory Board of private bank Berenberg since 2021 and was the Spokesman for the Managing Partners from 2009 to 2020. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of German Banks since 2010. He handed over the office of President to Martin Zielke in April last year. Peters was re-elected to the office of President of the Association of German Banks after Zielke’s resignation in August.
