Hans-Walter Peters unanimously elected new president of the Association of German Banks

At its meeting today, the Association of German Banks’ board of directors unanimously chose Hans-Walter Peters, spokesman for the managing partners of Joh. Berenberg, Gossier & Co. KG, as its new president. Mr Peters takes over from Jürgen Fitschen, co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank AG, whose three-year term expires on 11 April 2016.

Hans-Walter Peters comes with plenty of experience of work at association level: he has, among other things, actively served on the Association of German Banks’ board of directors for the past five years and in 2013 he was elected to its presidential board. In addition, his internationally-oriented private bank is represented on a number of association committees.

The handover of the presidential chair to a private banker this time reflects the Association of German Banks’ membership structure. While in Andreas Schmitz (HSBC Trinkaus and Burkhardt AG) and then Jürgen Fitschen (Deutsche Bank AG) the association has been represented most recently in the political and public arena by a regional bank and a big bank respectively, this task now falls to a private banker again in 2016.
