There are over 50,000 ATMs in Germany, which makes it easy to withdraw cash. But what should you do if the ATM ‘swallows’ your card? Here are a few important tips for dealing with problems with ATMs and keeping your banking information secure.

1. Contact your bank

Sometimes when you try to take money out of an ATM, the machine captures your bank card. This usually happens because the card has been blocked. There might be a variety of different reasons for a blocked card. Usually, cards are blocked at the request of their owner, because they have been lost or misplaced.  However, a card may also be blocked if the PIN is entered incorrectly multiple times. Or the bank card may be expired, and a new card has already been sent. If your card is ‘eaten’ by an ATM, you should contact your bank as soon as possible to find out what the problem is.

2. Be careful when using ATMs

Pay attention and do not get distracted when using ATMs. The cash dispenser will close after just a few seconds, even if you have not yet taken the money. You should also remove your bank card from the machine as quickly as possible in order to avoid security risks. If either the cash or the card is captured, and the branch you are at is currently open, it’s best to go and talk to one of the clerks immediately.

3. Card swallowed outside of bank hours

If the branch is closed or the card is captured by a machine not located within a branch, we recommend you contact your bank as soon as possible (this may be the next working day) and explain the issue.

4. Regularly check bank and credit card statements

In order to ensure that you catch any discrepancies early, it’s best to regularly check your bank and credit card statements. If you notice any charges that you cannot identify, do not hesitate to contact the bank that issued the card to clarify the problem.
