Heiner Herkenhoff is the new Chief Executive of the Association of German Banks. The association’s Board of Directors named 60-year-old Herkenhoff as successor to Christian Ossig, who had to resign from the position for personal reasons. Heiner Herkenhoff has been Head of Public Affairs at Commerzbank since 2009. Prior to that, he was Head of Communications at the Association of German Banks for nine years. He will start his new position as Chief Executive on 1 April 2023.

“Heiner Herkenhoff has many years of experience in the finance sector and in representing the interests of banks in the political arena and in respect of other interest groups,” said President, Christian Sewing. “He worked at the association for many years and knows it well. He has a good network of contacts among our member banks and among political decision-makers in Berlin and Brussels, and also has a wealth of management experience. He therefore has all the skills and experience required to lead the association and to champion the needs of our industry. I am very much looking forward to working with him”.

Heiner Herkenhoff said, “Thank you for placing your trust in me and I look forward to my new tasks. The Association of German Banks is supporting banks make their vital contribution to the energy transition and the digital transformation. And the best way to achieve this is to put the right regulatory framework in place. And that is what the Association of German Banks is committed to doing”.

In the past few months, Henriette Peucker has led the association on an interim basis. Christian Sewing said, ”Henriette Peucker deserves particular thanks and appreciation for the way she kept the association on course through a period of uncertainty and for successfully pursuing some important initiatives. As Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Political Affairs and Innovation, she will continue to play a leading role in the association and make important contributions to its work going forward”.
